Eco-School Committee
This year has seen the formation of Brookland’s first ‘Eco-School Committee’. The group of keen students have reviewed the sustainability of the school and spoken to various members of the school community – the site manager, the catering manager and Mr Bennett to identify three areas to focus on through the school year. The first was to reduce the school’s energy use which has led to the group speaking in front of all teachers about conserving energy use, creating posters that are displayed in every classroom and initiating an ‘automatic shutdown’ of computers overnight. The second involved increasing biodiversity around school, which involved the school engaging in ‘No Mow May’ in some areas of the school to create a habitat for invertebrates. Finally, the students have inputted to a recycling scheme set to roll out next year to reduce waste. The group have also applied for the school to achieve ‘Green Flag Status’ from the Eco-Schools group. With their positive growth in abundance and working alongside the charity ‘Let’s Go Zero’, they have generated our first ‘Climate Action Plan’!
